Was when a Treaty of Versailles (I say "a" because if I remember correctly from history class there were multiple Treaties of Versailles) was signed ending WWI with some unfair terms which eventually led to the Germans backlashing and starting WWII. Ignoring the unfair terms part of that, this day is celebrated by the countries who were in the Allied Forces (at least I'm assuming that it's celebrated in all of them). It was originally called Armistice Day, but later - at least in America - came to be known as Veteran's day, which brings me to my question.
Do the other countries who were in the Allied Forces also call it Veteran's Day or is it Armistice Day over there? Or is it something different?
Anyways, happy Veteran's/Armistice Day.

I call it rememberance day or armistice day.

Here it's not so much a celebration of victory, what's there to celebrate? Millions of people dying so a few Rothschilds and Rockefellers can profit when they pick up the pieces?

It's more a day to focus on how terrible the war was and help those effected by it. That's how I've always seen it anyway.

In the UK, it's 'Remembrance Day' - and Veteran's Day is in June.

Veteran's Day in the UK on the other hand, is a pointless day made up by Gordon Brown, so everyone ignores it.

A lot of people still call Remembrance Day 'Veteran's Day' in the UK anyway.

Very moving ceremony at the Cenotaph today with three of the remaining World War 1 veterans placing wreaths... we owe their generation so much.

I wrote a book...

I guess it's more to honor those who served their country in times of war. And also probably in part to celebrate the simple fact that the war was over. To celebrate the return of peace after the worst war mankind had ever seen (I know WWII was worse but that one hadn't happened yet and wouldn't for another 20 years). Although there are those who say that WWII was just a continuation of WWI. The point is, you have to honor the people who put their lives on the line to keep your country safe.

My dad was an army chaplain throughout WW2. he came back after seeing the awful carnage and burying so many young men deeply traumatised and never spoke about it.

However, he always made Remembrance Sunday at church a wonderful occasion and preached amazing sermons on the need for peace and the dreadful human suffering caused by war.

At the same time, he made sure that all the youngsters honoured those who had fought for us. So many of my friends had lost people, and my Uncle was in a POW camp.....

odd being quite old now, I can remember rationing and the years of austerity at the end of the war really clearly.
The memories are so powerful.... and the sound of a brass band marching with people on parade still makes me weep......

Sort of intriguing German carnival starts on 11th of November at 11.11am. And it continues until some day in February. Carnival sucks.
