you know the coffee shop opposite the lamb and packet? it's the flat above there. crazy layout and 7 bedrooms I think is what's wrong with it. we know the guys living there at the moment and they say it's good, and the ones that aren't graduating are staying so can't be that bad!

wondering why I only come here after nights out, currently sat in my panda suit, covered in randomers phone numbers and penis drawings, miffed that a guy pretended to be called steve to kiss us and horrified that my boobs have been very much signed. gotta sort my life out!

Those exact scenarios happened so many times last night... we had missions I'm not crazy! One of them was to get a kiss of a Steve... we thought we found one, kissed the crap outta him then he said he was called Rob..Then he burnt me with a cigarette! Unsuccessful or what? :(

And of course, I didn't see the surgeon who operated on me, just a general surgeon, so any decision has been delayed four weeks... seriously depressing when I thought that that might be when I was in hospital to actually get the surgery done.

Well, saw my consultant last week and she says there are signs of improvement but it is definitely looking likely that the surgeon will still have to operate...

Yeah, better than I was expecting. The delay made me worry things would get worse. Still a struggle day to day though, and not looking forward to
A. Major surgery
B. 7-10 days in hospital
C. Long recovery
D. Second lot of surgery 3-12 months down the line

How's the situation going Merman? Hope you're doing well.

After 11 months of being out of work I heard back from the job I interviewed with on Monday saying pending my reference and a CRB check the job should be mine. Fucks yeah!

Saw my surgeon, just waiting for the date of the operation. May find out more on Tuesday when I see Dr Raj, my consultant.

It's not been a great couple of weeks, worrying about the appointment. I had a couple of days of bad stomach pain when the Crohns flared up. And this week is my grandmother's funeral, but given my condition I probablywon't be able to go.

I can empathize, Merman. One of my Grandpas died in January. I drove 550 miles in a snowstorm (not embellishing that at all) so my Mom could see her Dad in the hospital before he went. He served in the Army in WWII, so there was the whole flag ceremony at his funeral. I finally got really emotional when they folded the flag and gave it to my Grandma. It's tough, for sure, be we go on.

Best to you.

I'm sure you have every chance of photographing for the olympics sometime.

Oh, wait, you've always sworn against shooting in JPEG and you like to put everything through photoshop, well, there's your photojournalism career down the drain darling.

JPEG bad. RAW good. Bitmaps OK.

I don't like the compression artifacts you get with JPEGs

While that is true, most papers and magazines send out photographers to shoot in Jpeg so they get the results asap. ;) Speaking from experience when doing some work experience for a newspaper.

But yeah, if I can get away with it I'll shoot in RAW, save in PNG, unfortunately when time is money it's all about keeping the finger on the shutter and sending the Jpegs straight through. :/

Any reason you can't just use a batch converter to quickly convert a whole directory before sending out your shots? Sounds like it might be worthwhile to save some time without sacrificing any image quality.

That said, if you're shooting with sufficiently high resolution, issues with compression don't really matter when it gets to print anyway, since the image is probably going to be scaled before then and the print artifacts will render compression artifacts pretty much unnoticeable - so I guess you might as well shoot in JPEG. When I shoot, I'm generally working on textures, so I need as much high resolution noise as possible. JPEGs really screw that up since a lot of the automated tools I use to generate data look primarily at contrast in shadows to determine surface normals; and JPEG compression especially sucks when it comes to neighbouring dark colours. I'm rambling...

For batch converting image files I use Irfan View

Batch editing is possible, but the scaling is a factor as Ambershee put it. Plus in an environment when getting in images before any competitors (like the olympics), it's pretty much a case of going straight from camera to the editor's office. The spray and pray mentality is even worse though.

Anyway, never knew you did photography now too Ambers, how did you get into that? :)

I wouldn't really call myself a photographer; I've been out and about a lot recently though. I frequently take pictures to use for texturing in game projects, or of environments for reference material.

That and if you're travelling it's good to keep a camera on you. I've been out to Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Northern Ireland and Iceland so far this year. Thinking of checking out Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan in a few months :)
