The Metaphysics of Playing Cards (answer p.2)
And what of the hierarchy of the cards within the suit? The lowly numbers,
from two to ten, represent the meek, they who shall inherit the earth.
They are the rank and file, the petty hierarchies of the commoners. Above
these are the tiers of the royalty, as with all societies, they overrule
the masses. The deep implication of the cards, and a lesson for us all,
is in the nature of the ace. Where the joker is the creation of God, the
ace is the moral absolute which must govern the governors. It is that
which provides the framework for a just rule. In normal play, the ace
has a value over that of the King, symbolising the just and righteous
rule which is possible in a well-adjusted society. However, often the
ace has a value of one- the lowliest of the low. In times when this occurs
in the world, and the moral good is subjugated to the will of the ruler,
becoming nothing more than the lowest of pawns, we see the terrible cataclysms
and upheavals so brutally epitomised by Stalinist and Nazi society. There
is, here, a valuable lesson for us all again.
This all makes sense, I hear you say, but what of my new mathematics,
what of the scientific revolution of recent years to which I have alluded?
Well, the extensions of these points within the framework of 20th century
scientific advances simply add to our realisation of the universal nature
of these truths.
The cycle of life begetting life is more than simply the death of the
individual to feed his children. Gaia herself extends far beyond this
tiny jewel of blue upon which we live, to encomapss the whole unimaginable
mass of creation. We learn from the great leaps in astro-physics that
only the lightest elements existed in the primordial universe once it
had cooled sufficiently to allow matter to condense from pure energy.
We learn that the carbon from which we are made, together with the other
complex heavy elemants of which our world is constructed, and which make
life possible, were fused from these lighter elements in the hearts of
great stars. It is only upon the death of these stars that our lives become
a possibility. The matter from the core of giant celestial bodies, ejected
at enormous velocities through the cosmos in the explosion of a supernova,
eventually condensed into the planet Earth and, indeed, yourself. We are
all, quite literally, made from stardust. We are all children not just
of our mothers, or even our Earth, but truly children of the cosmos.
The great cycle of life and death can surely be no more dramatic than
this? For who could visualise the timescales on which a great star lives
and dies? Who can truly accept that something as beautiful, as magnificent,
as powerful and vast and seemingly eternal as a star itself should have
to die, to explode with unimaginable ferocity, to plant the seeds of his
own existence? When we realise the true magnitude of the violence of our
conception, we must bring this knowledge to bear on the small and trifling
concerns which invade our minds and blur the clarity of our perception
of the nature of things.
And then the greatest mystery of them all- from whence did all this matter
and energy and unimaginable power and violence which has somehow ended
with the existence of my mind spring forth? How did this remarkable sequence
of events which has taken billions of years to unfold begin?
Here we still have to fall back on theory, but there are promising advances
in quantum mechanics which seem to provide a window into the underlying
nature of reality. The theory of Super Strings, unimaginably small quantum
objects which vibrate and exist in many dimensions, as the basic units
of reality, shows us that we do indeed, as you suggest, require a new
mathematics. Recent research suggests, however, that we can explain the
nature of the physical world by randomly appearing non-existent points
(allowed for by quantum mechanics) forming interlinking conections and
providing a framework for the existence of material space. These, when
modelled, expand exponentially, explaining the expansion of the universe,
and also allow for otherwise inexplicable phenomena such as quantum entanglement
by having connections which exist below the level of reality which we
can perceive.
