wrote: Pardon me? Do I know you?
Dear Ms Grantham
Thankyou for your response to my offer. Firstly, I feel that you are
being unnecessarily overwhelmed in asking me to pardon you, but I am nevertheless
happy to do so. You are pardoned.
I am impressed by the scope of the question you have posed for me. There
are of course many facets to what we may consider to be "knowledge"
and in asking not only "do I know" but more specifically "do
I know you" you have raised issues pertaining to both Epistemological
theory and also the nature of the self. For the sake of brevity, I will
overlook the Epistemological side of this query, and concentrate rather
on whether you know "me" Firstly, consider what you know. You
trust the evidence of your senses to provide you with an accurate view
of the physical reality surrounding you, and your memory to provide you
with a coherent and ongoing sense of self. However, this evidence cannot
be relied upon.
Consider dreams, which areas real at the time as the waking reality you
experience. Your only way of distinguishing "dreams" from "reality"
is the temporally cohesive nature of the waking world- ie it is the same
every time you wake up, while dreams are different. However, this does
prove that the simple evidence of experience and perception is far from
failsafe as evidence of reality and hence "knowledge". Also,
we must be prepared to accept the misleading evidence of hallucinations,
distortions and so forth. When all this is considered, therefore, we have
to conclude that the only evidence we have regarding the nature of the
physical world is our sensory perceptions thereof. These perceptions can
be misleading and hence have to be doubted.
We can therefore have no reliable evidence about anything to do with
the external world
The implication is obvious- you can know nothing except the existence
of your own mind. You therefore do not know me, although you could conclude
that I am more likely to be than not.
