For many years, people have asserted that there is much truth in the "Old Wives Tales" which abound in our ancient culture. However, nobody to date has systematically analysed these assertions. Now, that balance is finally redressed.

A Watched Pot Never Boils

This appears to be true. I watched a pot in my kitchen cupboard for nine hours solid yesterday, and not only did it not boil, it didn't do anything at all! A more appropriate phrase might be: A pot, or any other inanimate object, will never do anything whatsoever without outside influence, whether watched or not.

Thank all that is good for some sensible (though perhaps too specific) truth-type-stuff.

My horse bolted yesterday (unsirprising considering the hose incident) and as a result I left my door open as recommended by the popular saying.

That night my house was ransacked by burglars and I lost everything I owned.

He Who Laughs Last Laughs Longest

It is a fair assumption that he who laughs last will be the last surviving human being (unless he never laughs, in which case the person who laughs last will be the second to last person alive). By this time it is impossible to know how many people there will have been, but it is guaranteed to be many billions. It is possible that any one of these has had the longest laugh. It is possible that the person who laughs last (ie the last human ever) laughs longest. However the odds against this being the case are billions to one.
